The wagtail gets its name from wagging, or bobbing its tail with a certain constancy. The slender bird is found in much of Europe and is the national bird of Latvia. I discovered this one while hiking around a lakeshore in southern Sweden, a place where it returns in the spring after perhaps wintering in the south. The lovely markings are grey, white, and black.
