This poppy variety is the floral emblem for the state of California, and it is found from mountains to desert across a range of climates. An interesting characteristic of the plant is that it can perform as an annual or sometimes a perennial, with more than one burst of blossoms if the climatic conditions permit. It is also light sensitive, closing its petals as the light diminishes through a process called nyctinasty.
